Acoustiblok: Educational SectorEducational Sector

Schools and Universities are one of the most ignored areas of society when it comes to noise. This is such a big sector of interest that new building codes and classroom designs are beginning to immerge in recognition of this problem. There has been extensive studies conducted to prove that students can and do receive better grades when the learning environment has been acoustically treated promoting a stress free and focused learning environment. Terms like "NIC", "NC", & "STC" are commonly used to establish the correct environment for educational spaces. A typical classroom should have an NC-30-35, which is equivalent to 38-42 dBA. To achieve these types of numbers several things must be taken into consideration.

The first step is a solid "STC" rating of 40-45 or higher, for the structural walls of the space. This will help isolate exterior noises from infiltrating the classroom. The second step is to engineer the “HVAC” system to prevent adjacent rooms and buildings leaking noise into the classroom. The third step is to create a low "NC" in the classroom. This is done by calculating the reflection time of the interior space and engineering the amount of absorption to insert in the room. By absorbing the reflections in a learning environment it raises the level on intelligibility of the instructor and helps the students focus on the ideas being conveyed. This means their auditory system is not trying to process, filter, and block out irrelevant sounds and noises allowing their brains to focus all its processing power on the subject matter.

Acoustiblok 4.88 is the solution for dramatically reducing the sound transmissions through school walls, ceilings and floors. The unique linear attenuation that is created when Acoustiblok 4.88 is added to gypsum assemblies, provides enhanced noise isolation at frequency ranges that gypsum inherently has deficiencies. These frequency ranges I speak of are still evident with as much as 4 layers of gypsum applied to a wall assembly. Acoustiblok 4.88 changes the internal damping of the wall. Acoustiblok 4.88 not only adds essential mass to the wall, but it also enhances the flexibility and stiffness changing the natural resonance of the structure. This is why a wall with Acoustiblok 4.88 has a more linear (without dramatic dips and peaks) transmission loss than that of multiple layers of Gypsum or hybrid gypsum designs encompassing adhesives and other variations.

Acoustiblok 4.88 can also be used in the fabrication of acoustical doors and HVAC duct work. Windows will have to be engineered, project specific, and supplied by a specialty manufacturer. When these areas of the classroom are given the proper attention, the result will be "Quiet Classrooms" conducive for learning!

Acoustiblok Architectural panels can be utilized within a classroom to contour the tonality and control the reflection build up that so easily occurs in these fairly "LIVE" environments. This will aid in increasing the NIC & NC of the classroom. These panels are available in many different colors and washable surfaces for ease of maintaining.
