Thermablok: Floor UnderlaysFlooring Underlayments

Acoustiblok 4.88 is an excellent material for reducing airborne sound transmissions. The properties that make this a great sound reduction material can also give certain advantages when implemented properly for floor to floor sound transmissions. First, you need to understand what type of noises you are trying to block from floor to floor. Typically, the first thing that everyone wants to eliminate is the sound of someone walking, jumping, or just moving around in the unit above. The standard acoustical values for ceiling/floor assemblies are given in "STC" & "IIC". STC is a measurement for revealing how much airborne sound is transmitted through a construction assembly (remember that airborne noise can flank into connected partitions and present itself in an adjacent space perceived as airborne noise). IIC is a measurement for revealing how much forced, or impact is transmitted through an assembly. This seems to always fall back on a subjective impression of what a person feels he or she should still hear coming through a floor. The IIC test is very objective in its criteria. The problem is that it is very difficult to take into consideration all of the structural connection points in a building's final floor/ceiling assembly. The bottom line is, you want to create as much impact absorption you can and, if possible, a void within the floor assembly that contains nothing more than air and limited points of transmission.

Acoustiblok: Floor Underlays
Acoustiblok 4.88 can be used two different ways for two distinct solutions. If you place our material directly on the subfloor, it will add mass, lowering the natural resonance of the floor, which will reduce the perception of airborne noise from above (like dumping a scoop of mud on a drumhead). Unfortunately, this does not reduce the amount of impact being exerted on the floor!

If you can de-couple Acoustiblok 4.88 from the existing subfloor and do so with a material that has a large quantity of air/resilience, the result will be less forced transmissions directly into the floor assembly and the added advantage of an airtight membrane, enhancing the STC of the assembly. The standard IIC that construction codes feel is acceptable is ridiculous! Human perception of forced noise is very different than airborne. A high IIC, unlike a high STC, is a very different experience. A high IIC makes the noise seem (more in the distance) and not directly over our heads, but it is still heard; therefore, making us think not much has changed.

We feature three (3) distinct underlayments for Three (3) distinct types of finished floors.

AcoustiwoolAcoustiwool TFO.11 (tile. marble, & travertine)

Achieving the unique balance of structural strength with resilient sound damping characteristics, this is the ideal product for use with tile floor finishes. This 0.11" thick material is manufactured with 85% Recycled content has an antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold. For use beneath ceramic and porcelain tile flooring. Acoustiblok 16 oz. with Acoustiwool-TF0.11 are Robinson Floor tested and rated "Residential" by the Tile Council of North America.

AcoustiwoolAcoustiwool WFO.125 ( Hard wood, pre-engineered, And laminates)

The Acoustiwool-WF01.25 has been designed for use beneath hardwood, laminate and engineered wood floors. Used for wood floor finish installations only, on concrete or wood sub-floors beneath the Acoustiblok. Acoustiwool -WF0.125 works to decouple and isolate the top floor surface from the subfloor. The 1/8" thick wool composite is lightweight, flexible and easy to work with. Acoustiwool -WF0.125 is available with or without a moisture barrier laminated to it. Both have an antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold, extremely resilient, long lasting, and won't break down like air pockets in foam products.

AcoustipadAcoustipad (carpeted floors)

Used floor installations (post-construction), after decking is down, between decking or concrete and Acoustiblok for carpet floor finishes. When used in addition to Acoustiblok, the Acoustipad works to decouple the Acoustiblok from the structural floor surface. The 3/8 thick foam pad is lightweight, flexible and easy to work with.
Roll Size: 4' x 35' (140 SqFt.)
